“Public opinion research is an important tool for government departments, and is a main focus of work done by PWGSC. It reaches a wide range of Canadians including the general public, users of government services, and those in particular segments of the population such as parents, victims of crime, business people, seniors, youth, Aboriginal peoples and persons with disabilities. This type of research plays an important role in assessing the effectiveness of government policies, programs and services. Information gathered is used to better understand the needs and expectations of Canadians, and gives them a way to contribute to the discussion.

“New standards for telephone and online survey research were also developed which will help provide the government with a harmonized approach to survey quality and ensure transparency and value for money.”

In the final status report issued by the present Auditor General of Canada, public servants were commended for their work. Significant improvements were evident in the government’s financial management practices, including the creation of departmental audit committees.

However, there were also areas that her Office identified as needing particular attention. One such area involves the need for fundamental change to improve the living conditions on First Nations reserves and in Inuit communities. Specific issues that arose included the fact that First Nations continue to lack a level of well-being in their communities that would allow them to easily complete high school. Referencing data from DIAND, the report mentions that the rate of high school graduation for First Nations members living on reserves is just 41%, as opposed to the higher rate for the general population at 77%. Likewise, more than half of reserves do not have safe drinking water.

Although it causes no problems for cattle, the E. coli strain of the bacterium produces a toxin that is dangerous to humans. If ingested, E. coli causes cramping, diarrhea and in rare cases, kidney failure or even death.
When cows carrying the bacteria are slaughtered, E. coli can sometimes get into the food supply. People who eat undercooked ground beef are at risk of becoming ill from E. coli contamination. Researchers discovered that there were other, non-pathogenic bacteria that carried markers identical or chemically similar to E. coli. When mice were immunized with some of these non-pathogenic bacteria, the bacteria produced antibodies that prevented the mice from becoming infected with E. coli. Scientists expressed an E. coli – specific antibody in plants and then incorporated the plant-based antibody into cows’ food.

As of next April, PCSP will offer expanded services and facilities at its base in Resolute, Nunavut.

The expanded facility will offer almost 2,000 square meters of living accommodations, storage, office space, and warehouse space. The work of researchers will be facilitated by a number of personal and professional features available including an expanded stand-alone laboratory, communications capacity (radio and satellite phones) and specialized equipment and computers.
Many types of research will be supported by this facility ranging from hydrographic surveys to determine safe routes for shipping to climate change and geological research.

Please note that it is _____13____ that the amendments that your division is making to the draft legislation for the Federal Employee Benefits Program be received by midnight January 31. Since this legislation _____14____ come into effect March 31, and must pass through the parliamentary process before that, all deadlines have to be met.

Application forms should be submitted in time to meet the September 1, 2012 deadline. The non-interactive forms (Local Festivals Application Form and Local Festivals Budget form) are available at the Department’s website, but may not be used to submit an application for the September deadline. Interactive forms are released ____29_____ and will be ____30____ about two months before the September 30 deadline and can be used to submit applications.

We are presently in the process of planning the conversion of the old archival storage room into a new work space for government call centre employees who will man the help desk for public clients of Health Canada’s Local Drug Assistance Program (LDAP). Since the public will be able to access these employees by internet, phone, or in person, this space must not only be kept tidy, but must also be free of all extraneous materials that will not be used by LDAP employees. We are presently in the process of planning the conversion of the old archival storage room into a new work space for government call centre employees who will man the help desk for public clients of Health Canada’s Local Drug Assistance Program (LDAP). Since the public will be able to access these employees by internet, phone, or in person, this space must not only be kept tidy, but must also be free of all extraneous materials that will not be used by LDAP employees. For these reasons, all units are requested to remove documents that they have previously stored in this area by the end of the month. Any documents found in the area after that point will be deemed to be extra copies that are no longer needed and will be shredded immediately.

These summaries are details of past experiences that cover such skills as client service, conflict resolution, teamwork, communication and judgment. Further information on the contents required is available on the intranet. Although there is no deadline for submission, we recommend completing them as soon as possible so as to be ready for any new openings that become available in the months ahead.

Before the 1960s, wilderness airplane crashes usually ended in tragedy. Even if they were not seriously injured during the crash, survivors faced a long wait before they could be rescued, often dying due to starvation and exposure before they could be saved. Rescue crews had difficulty finding crash survivors obscured by brush and snow. They were forced to fly dangerously low, searching by eyesight alone for an SOS or smoke signals.
In the early 1960s, a device was built that combined a radio transmitter and antenna in one compact package. It was light and durable, fire and water-proof, had shock protection, and was designed to attach to the tail of an aircraft, then separate and curve away from the plane during a crash. In every test, searchers found their target in less than two hours – an unbelievable improvement in search and rescue abilities.
